The same chrome part for indoor use and for outdoor use are two different jobs. Indoor decorative parts are about looking good; outdoor, bathroom, and coastal high-salt environments are about surviving corrosion. Just last week an outdoor-furniture hardware customer came to us because ordinary chrome parts had rusted after six months near the coast. So here is how high-corrosion parts should actually be plated.
It comes down to one thing: heavy, well-made nickel
As we have said before, the nickel is the corrosion workhorse on decorative parts. For outdoor parts, the first move is to increase the nickel thickness. A standard nickel thickness may be fine indoors; outdoors it has to go up.
Step up: duplex nickel
For higher requirements, use duplex nickel (semi-bright plus bright nickel). There is a potential difference between the two layers, so even when corrosion starts it spreads sideways rather than driving straight down to the substrate. That extends life significantly. It is a common system for faucets and outdoor parts.
Copper-nickel-chrome systems
Some parts get a copper strike before nickel to improve leveling and adhesion, forming a copper-nickel-chrome stack that balances appearance and corrosion. Whether to add copper depends on the part and the budget.
Pin the requirement down with a salt spray number
Saying "corrosion resistant" means nothing on its own; you need a hard figure. Put the salt spray duration in the spec, for example neutral salt spray, 72 hours, no red rust. Our parts meet 72 hours, and higher can be discussed. Then both sides have something to hold to, instead of arguing after delivery.
